SB County school superintendent to retire at end of 2014 | Gary Thomas

After six years of overseeing programs for more than 414,000 students, San Bernardino County Superintendent Gary Thomas announced Tuesday his plans not to seek re-election. Thomas was appointed to the elected position in August 2008 to finish the term of former county Superintendent Herbert Fischer and was elected again in 2010.

By the end of his three-year term in December 2014, Thomas will be 60. “I hope to spend a lot of time with family and grandchildren and pay some attention to my health,” said Thomas, who jokes about gaining weight as a result of eating too much “rubber chicken” at various events.

“This was a very difficult decision. My family and I have been talking about this for the past year, and we kept on arriving at this conclusion.” Just because Thomas will not vie for his current position next year, doesn’t mean he’s walking away from education.

The High Desert resident said he may take a jab at teaching at a university.
